I'm not sure I'm prepared to wait for 2 years before I make that decision - but I will for the good of the breed if necessary. SCs are the smallest of the 5 white European sheep dogs - the Great Pyrenees, the Italian Maremma, the Hungarian Kuvasz, the Polski Owcarek Podhalanski, and the Slovensky Cuvac. Our club president has an article on these differences at http://www.slovenskytchouvatch.com/5whitebreed.html The Great Pyrenees is the largest with males at 100-160 lb. and females at 85-125 lb. For SCs males are around 79–97 lbs, and females at 68–81 lb. But remember there are variations in every breed with some dogs being unusually smaller and some much bigger.

To some these breeds are hard to tell apart. But each dog has distinctive characteristics - the ears, the coat, the way they carry their tail, the head, their physique. But their personalities are very similar since they were bred to be independent - autonomous from the shepherd. They don't herd the flocks - they guard them, and they do not need to be taught this. It is in their nature. They will not like everyone. They like to bark and growl to intimidate strangers and wild animals to keep them away from their flocks and family.

My Valika is very friendly with my immediate family and once she gets to know you she is fine but not overly friendly. This is not a dog who will run up to strangers waging her tail and looking for attention. She loves children and she is very playful. When she wants my attention she comes and stands up next to me and stares into my face or swings her paw over my arm to keep me from typing on my computer keyboard. She usually is easy to control and submits to me when I need to bathe her or cut her nails. She waits patiently for her food and is never aggressive to me. But she is protective of me. I regret that I did not socialize her more when she was younger. She is absolutely fearless, except for 2 things - my two cats. I know she could hurt them if she wants to. But she doesn't because she knows they are MINE and that she needs to guard them and not hurt them even when they are not nice to her.

My other SC Basie is a male and he is a big lovable lug. He thinks he is a lap dog and he is friendly to everyone. But unlike Valika, he is afraid of a lot of things. He gets scared and runs away and usually wants Valika to check everything out before he feels safe enough to bark at someone or something.

"Bad dog" doesn't work to control my SCs and they are not motivated to do something just for treats. But if I act like it is important and show that I want her to do something, Valika seems to want to do it for me and for the challenge it presents.</commentbody></comment><comment><type>Comment</type><username>Miriam</username><ip>70.156.92.248</ip>
<date>Fri, 10 Apr 2009 17:20:47 GMT</date><status>Approved</status><commentbody format="text">Hi Janet, it is so lovely to see the pictures of your beautiful Valika!

For me every day is an adventure. I received Dara sight unseen also from Elizabeth and during my day just thinking about Dara puts a glow all over me. She is everything.
She is my special little clown dog. Sometimes she is a devil and steals my bedroom slippers and takes my underware outside for the world to see but it is all in fun. There is not a mean strick in her body. She loves everyone even the little agressive dog next door who growled at her in the beginning. Now they are visiting and playing alone the fence line. Dara is extremely smart and loving. Its amazing how they listen and understand. She has brought so much joy to our family
I cannot imagine life without her. Dara has two mothers, my sister and me and I truly believe she loves us equally. I travel and worry about separation anxiety but my sister covers the gap and I always talk to Dara on the phone while I'm away. When I come home its like she cannot get enough of me. She rubs all over me and makes these cute little noises. I do not think she minds when I leave because her Uncle Gery takes her on nature hikes at least twice a day and she has her cousin to play with. Everyday is an adventure and there is no time for boredom.

Are you going to the show in Texas? Dara is getting big now, I'm not sure her kennel is big enough.

We are happy to get contact to you!
Please start to think more about breeding your Anna - Olivia! She is a wonderful sweet female with a great bloodline for USA.
To have a litter is a lot of work, but more an enjoyment, than work. And a great adventure for your kid.
There are several people, they started breeding in United States and each one will tell you, what to do.
The Club has weekly people, they ask for a SC. To be organized in this way, it will be much more easier, to find the right families for our beloved breed.
Your next step to know is: what are the hips of Anna like. A pre-x-ray with 9-12 months is helpful. In Slowakia they do the x-ray with 12 months. This is not allowed in USA. The OFA make the certification with 24 months.
If you want to get contact to other breeders, let us know!

Some background on me, I am an American that has lived in Slovakia for the last 5 years, and first encountered the SC a few years back. As I am a dog person, and not having one for past five years, i really missed one, so the family decided it was time to get one, and after talking to various breeders in Slovakia and doing some research, we decided on getting a SC. Pup is currently four months old and Female. (see above picture) So far, all is going ok with the pup, and we have been spending a lot of time socializing her.

As my work assignment will most probably be taking me back to the States in next year or so, the SC will also be joining us back in the States. I never thought about breeding a dog before, but in the event she is able, how difficult is it to breed them? I enjoy a companion dog, but would like an honest opinion on how difficult this process is and what are the odds all the pups will find homes. I am a firm believer in no puppy mills, and getting dogs "fixed" as the world already has an abundance of unwanted dogs. One of the only reasons I would consider a litter is to support the population of SC in the USA.

Lastly, i do give you alot of credit in trying to revive this "lost" breed of dog, and as long as I am living over here, if anyone would like some help on anything feel free to contact me.

Thanks for reading</commentbody></comment><comment><type>Comment</type><username>Dennis E Pisula</username><ip>82.194.62.230</ip><userid>92</userid>
<date>Sat, 14 Jun 2008 12:11:00 GMT</date><status>Approved</status><commentbody format="text">love your job!
