We are at the beginning of breeding and we have to be very careful in choosing the combination of female and males in order to improve the bloodlines.

The breeding rules in USA :

No female and no male can get their x-ray result before the dogs are 24 months old. OFA mandates this regulation; see www.OFA.org for more information. This means no dog can be bred before a minimum age of 24 months.

The x-ray result is very important. Several SC have been neutered after x-ray, because the results indicated hip displacement: Imported SC as Xero Biely demon, Runa Janin Ranc, Chiva Tanjui Janin Ranc, Argo Xenia Zahrada, Amar Xenina Zahrada. Their owners did not want to propogate hip displacement weakness in the gene pool.

Here is a photo from Amar Xenina Zahrada after getting two new hips in June 2009.

It is the responsibility of breeders to maximize the chances to have healthy great dogs.

We have following bloodlines:

MALES

Males possibly ready to breed now:

Anton Janin Ranc = Iro Hodkovieskej les x no x-ray ( we are waiting for the results) VA

Polo Janin Ranc= Borderlove White Power x pre-x-ray 0-0 (we are waiting for the result) CO

Ghandi vom Sassenerger Blockhaus= Borderlove White Power x  final x-ray 0-0 PA

Bundas Mika = Flok Kazan Janin Ranc x Aida Stastny pes no x-ray (we are waiting for the result) SC

Pavel Mika = Flok Kazan Janin Ranc x Aida Stastnej pes no x-ray (we are waiting for the result) VA

Xaver vom Boehmerwald = Iro Hodkovieskej les x Besy spod Babej hory (Eso Biela dolina)no x-ray TX

Bado Janin Ranch = Borderlove White Power no x-ray TX

Arthur Tranquil Hill (Borderlove White Power x Iro Hodkoviskej no x-ray

Hopefully a new young male Ultimo will arrive soon with a totally new bloodline.

Males possibly ready to breed in 2011/12

Borick Tranquil Hill (Anton JR x Roza zPd)

FEMALES

For 2011 and 2012 we may see pups out of:

Clea spod Babej hory (Kora Veperec and Eso Biela dolina and Polo Janin Ranc)

in Autumn 2009

Angel Tranquil Hill (Anton Janin Ranc and Roza z Pozdisovskej doliny ). Angel cannot be mated with Borderlove White Power, or with Iro Hodkovieskej les relavated males. Due to consanguinuity. Angel could be mated with Bundas or Ultimo(2011) or Pavel after getting x-ray results.

Ulka z Pozdisovskej doliny (Ben Biely Rodo x Uska Atlas Janin Ranc x-ray 1-1 ???)

Ulka can be mated with all males, except of "Ultimo"!That wouldn't be very clever to use any male out of Borderlove White Power or Iro Hodkoviskej les. Her pups would be too close in bloodline all other bloodlines. Using another male like Bundas will bring a totally new bloodline. All the pups out of this litter could use White Power or Iro or Ben Biely rodo.

Dara spod Babej hory (Paris Cerny koralek x Bara spod Babej hory) open for all males without Eso Biela Dolina.

Dora spod Babej hory (Paris Cerny Koralek x Bara spod Babej hory) x ???

Both Dara and Dora can be mated with all males, except Xaver vom Boehmerwald, who is out of Bara's sister(mother of Xaver Bessy spod Babej hory.

Xenia vom Boehmerwald (Iro Hodkovieskej les x Besy spod Babej hory) Cannot be bred with Iro or Eso due to consanguinity.

Valika Cerny Koralek is open for all bloodlines.

2009 litter....

Clea spod Babej hory x Polo Janin Ranc at the Kennel Sandy Acre in IN=

ready to breed in 2012.

These pups can be breed with:

All Iro Hodkovieskej les = Anton JR-Xaver vBW-Ultimo zPd-and Bundas M!

Not with : Bado JR, Borick TH -Polo JR-Ghandi!

And perhaps with all out of Ulka's litter planned in late autum too.(y-litter)

The male owner gets directrly 300$ and additional 100$ if there are only 2 pups. Till 6 pups additional to the 300$ 900$. If there are more pups, no more fee.

Even dog owner find a special other agreement, this is accepted.

In order for me to register Tauqua as a service dog, she MUST be spayed. BUT I've also considered waiting on that to see if she can (or should) have her own litter. What would you recommend? IF I decide to have her spayed, how old does she have to be to have that done? I'm not sure I'm prepared to wait for 2 years before I make that decision - but I will for the good of the breed if necessary. She'll have to have at least 1 year's training before I can register her as a service dog anyway. It would kill me if anything happened to Dara so now she is being a couch potato - watching animal planet during the day. We put locks on our gates and I'm thinking about putting a rod iron fense around my front yard with a key lock. Our area is struggling with unemployments, homeless people plus the usual drug addicts. Dara is hesitant toward strangers so I don't think she would go readily. They would also have a hard time getting her over a six foot fense. ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR: Janet USA/Texas EMAIL: jankc@sbcglobal.net IP: 67.67.217.250 DATE: 07/01/2009 04:53:16 PM I wonder what they are doing with the dogs? Ulka z Pozdisovskej doliny was born in June 2007 at the little village  "Pozdisovskej".

The" kennel z Pozdisovskej doliny" owned by "Anton Cizmar" excists since more than 30 years.

A well-known successful breeder.

Anton Cizmar was also at the 40. Memorial Prof. A. Hruza in Pribylina and several dogs out of his Kennel was shown with good results. (see Dog Show results)

Xit and Anton

It was a happy meeting with my friends and Ulka recognized her breeder.

Ulka arrived with us at May 15. in Frankfurt. She was happy, to go out of her crate after such a long flight.

Friday she met the little Jack Russel owned by my daughter  (photo) and "Luky, the 10 year old male (Bohemia Genao-Jana Tomeskova) owned by my son Steve.

My dresam, to have puppies with, because it is a wonderful old bloodline and
Luky is healthy and with a great attitude.

Saturday at the afternoon a first big event for Ulka. Visiting Cologne with 100 000 of people everywhere. Visiting first time a restaurant.

Wine festival on the "Alter Markt" the entrance area to the old City of Cologne.

Ulka's first visit in a restaurant and she wants so much "Schweinshaxe with Sauerkraut".

At the evening at home she was playing with the little Jack Russell of my daughter, I bred 3 years ago. Than she started with a really bad Dia ... ,stopped eating and drinking... so that we visited a Hospital in Lohmar. The bloodtest was very good; the ultrasound was also ok.

She got a lot of medicine, shoots (antibiotica) and baby food out of these little glasses.

Sunday again to the hospital! The Doc agreed that we can travel with Ulka... and he has given to me more shoots of antibiotica, I have to set by myself.

So we started Monday to Iphofen (Franken) for 3 days. She was living now first time in a hotel room, visiting again the restaurants..., always at our site. Each one passing our table made a comment about the beauty of Ulka.

Wednesday our trip to Praha, where we have had booked a big appartment in the old town close to the castle of Praha.

On the highway to Praha I saw a sign "Rocycany" and old rememberings came up.

How often I visited Kennel Mytska samota or Kennel Farmy Zbiroh or...

So I asked Dennis, if we can leave the highway at the excit of Myto, to see an old friend again. It took a while, till we finally found Zbiroh. Ringing at the gate... and Jan Sklenar was looking out of a window.

He came to the gate, wondering who was there. Took a while..., to regocnize me and he called Alena Sklenarova, his wife.

It was such an enjoyment, when she recognized me!

and we have had a lot to talk about ...

Jan called his grandson (19) who is living with the grandparents. His English was really helpful for a lot of talks.

Family Sklenar with grandson ...

After driving for 2 hours in Praha, we finally found our appartment and started directly to explore the city.

Ulka was walking with us all the time! Several hours and she was a foto modell for hundreds of visitors of Praha. Videos also, mostly taken by people from Japan.

Hundreds of times we must explain, that she is not a Golden Retriever or.... and only 3 times  people recognized: this is a Cuvac!

But 100 ' s of times we heared: pekny pes.... or krasny! (meaning: beautiful...)

in front of the Schwarzenberg Palais

on the top over Praha..

Ulka very helpful in watching the Palais...

one of our walks over the Charlesbridge..

20. of May Ulka started with her heat and a lot of males got crazy, following us.

At the last evening we tried to get a table in one of the nice restaurants at the Moldau..., but no chance. So finally we went downstairs at the Charlesbridge and found a table in a nice little restaurant.

Than people showed up with instruments, carrying out benches and table  and started to sing and play. Mostly 10-14 people was playing ..., old Czech folklore but also some American songs. Than an old Lady (perhaps 80??) passed. Turned arround going back to the musicants, took her coat of and started to dance.

What a world!

Friday we started  to go to Pribylina.

A 8 hour drive, after we lost the way ..., but in this way we could see a lot of the beautiful country of Czech and Slovakia.

Vlado Javorcik our US-judge has booked the same hotel and he told us, he will be there at the late afternoon.

Arriving at the old Castle Hradok, Vlado was waiting. We have had time to talk, till a phone call was coming for Vlado. Tibor Havelka with Bedrich Mesarosz in his car needed help. Their car was broken down in Luiptovske Mikulas.

here Vlado, looking up the map, where to find the judge Tibor Havelka.

Next morning early breakfast and to the showground

We met several old friends at the parking lot,

also Anton Cizmar,
Family Cezsari, Eva etc. Because I have forgotten to take Ulkas papers with me, Dennis must drive back to the hotel. Than I could enter as the last one the Vet control.

It was windy and cold and because of Ulka's heat we found a place sitting alone.

 Two jackets was just enough.

We got the catalogue and our nummer for the show and than it started. Official opened by Jana. What an unbeleavable surrounding. All the white dogs, so many people.

The show was well organized and one group followed the next.

than it was Ulka's turn.

Here teeth controll. She lost a lot of weight and was in a bad shape. Not looking like we know her. And... she was so nacked. In the heat of Texas she has lost her fur and she was next to all this furry dogs something else..., but not looking like these Cuvac.

So she got her new name:Lady Catastrophy.

It was a great day. Thanks to all. "Jana, who organized in the well known perfect way, the judge Tibor and Vlado, who was organizing the ring and also to all the wonderful people we could met.

At Saturday evening Jana and her friend Jana came to thge Castle and we have had a wonderful dinner. Talking talking talking.

We left Hradok at Monday morning. A little calm time for us all. Ulka finally learned, to walk with us without a leash and started to eat again.

On the way back to Germany we stopped for 1 day in Passau and explored this historical city. Than back to Cologne. Ulka loved to drive and she always jumped into the car, taking over her seat.

We spend a lot of time with my kids, mostly at my sons house. Luky, my favorite father for the first pups never mated before. He was so interested in Ulka, but because it was to early for mating, they only played.

We descided, not to breed Ulka now. The pups would be born at a time, most hot in Texas. And pups must play, run ... but not with 100-120Fahrenheit.

So we will wait till November to breed her.

Thursday we arrived at 8at the airport. Lufthansa found our booking, also for Ulka, but..

They told us, the kennel is too small. (Lufthansa flew her from Houston to Frankfurt)

We know about the sibblings: Ute, UDA and Uska. But 3 of the sisters and brothers we didn't found yet.

Now I can tell also something about Uska.

Uska is living in the Kennel z Cibika www.zcibika.estranky.sk with Maxi Povodie Hrona.

Rudolf Gonda is one of the established old breeder. Successful in shwoing and handling his dog.

Here a photo from UDA and her owner Eva from Prague

Uda and Eva/ both are living in Pague Czech Republik;

Because of a lot of difficulties at his home, Anton descided, to sell "Ulka" to Elisabeth. So Ulka flew in to Texas in the age of 17 months (Nov.2008).

Ulka is now the first Slovensky Cuvac registered with AKC ...

a dog in history for the club and all Slovensky Cuvac.

Ulka is after first difficulties in USA now at home and happy with her "pack".

Her next heat is coming soon and we plan to have a litter with her.

(heat in June-August birth.)

We have a serious problem with our pack of SC in the garden. The areas we wanted to create our rose garden or Butterfly garden ... are the most favorite areas our dogs want to sleep, or dig or.. no chance over weeks than we found our resulution:

Dog fencing options for gardens

Keeping dogs out of the garden is easy enough, it just takes a little planning. Your options can range from complicated and attractive to simple but not particularly aesthetic. Chicken wire is easy to set up and it works to keep puppies out of the garden. All you need to do is unfurl the roll and attach to the stakes placed about one foot apart. If you want to go a step further, you can use wire, or hurricane fencing, it comes in different lengths. Wire fencing is put together in the same way as chicken wire.

Go for the wire fencing if you need a fence right away. In an hour’s time, you can have your entire garden protected. Also, wire fencing can be used to protect plantings in immature garden beds. First, form the fencing into a hoop, and then attach it at either side of the bed. The plants can grown through the wire, yet the puppy cannot reach the plant’s roots. Fencing materials are readily available at any hardware or garden supply store, and putting up any of the wire fencing methods is an easy afternoon job.

However, chicken wire and wire fencing are not attractive, so some gardeners/pet owners decide to go for nicer fencing—all wood or wood/cyclone fencing combination. Some people even splurge for sculptural iron or Grapewood fences. There is a big difference in price and time commitment, but they all work.

Dogs in the garden

Your puppy will have access to lots of areas that are outside of your home. You might have a fenced backyard and an open front yard, if that is the case, make sure you inspect the plants that are growing. Are any of them toxic to animals? If you are not sure, take a sample of the plant to your local nursery. Afterwards, compare it to our list to see if there is a risk for your pet. Remove the plant if it is toxic, or move it to an area that your dog doesn’t have access to, such as the unfenced front yard. Also, you can make a designated fenced in plants-only garden, and dogs will not have access to it. If any of your plants are special to you, you should move them away from adventurous pups, at least until they have learned all the outdoor rules.

Think about your vegetable garden. Many dog owners think that since vegetables are edible, so are the plants. That is not always the case. For example, tomato plants are members of the nightshade family and they are toxic. Of course, we would never taste a tomato vine, but our puppies might do so. There are many other reasons why you should keep your puppy out of the vegetable garden. Their feet can quickly damage the plants. Dogs love to dig up soft earth and to roll around patches of basil. Also, when dogs are in our vegetables, it is not good for us. They don’t realize that vegetables are food and treat them just like they do any other areas of the yard. That means they will urinate or defecate there just like they would anywhere else. Notice the burned spots of grass in your lawn—urine can burn and kill tender plants, and feces will contaminate our food and make it toxic.

AKC has written:

AKC Staff is pleased to inform you that at the July meeting of the AKC Board of Directors a proposal to revise the elgibility criteria of AKC-FSS breeds to participate in AKC Companion was approved with an effective date of January 2010!!!

Chung Sahm is the name of the Slovensky Cuvac going to:

 Jakarta Indonesia in September!

Our friends from Animal First are involved again to bring her to Jakarta!

Chung sahm is meaning "loyal"  and she will live with 3 other dogs called:Ding Dong and Dong-Dong and Muimuih.

Irene and Gene are waiting for their puppy, after they lost their Great Pyrennae after a long life together. They told me,

Chung Sahm is out of my beloved Bessy spod Babej hory, her second litter with Alan Janin Ranc.

Both pups out of Bessy's first litter with Iro Hodkovieskej les (Xenia and Xaver vom Boiehmerwald) are in Texas/USA. Both are wonderful dogs.

Dara spod Babej hory far back swimming first time. ( she is the daughter out of Bessy's sister Bara spod Babej hory (Eso Biela dolina x Kora Veperec); in the middle: Xenia vom Boehmerwald (Iro Hodkovieskej les x Bessy spod Babey hory sister to Bara) and in the front Ulka z ozdisovskey doliny

Very often I get emails with the question: how I can own/buy a Slovensky Cuvac!

Emails and phonecalls are following, to find out or to know more about the families, they want to adopt a SC.

In 2009 we have had 1 litter in Virginia with 2 pups and so the club could be helpful, to find 2 great homes for them.

Tanqua Tranquil Hill is going to New York. Paula wants to train a Slovensky Cuvac as a service dog. She cann't wait, to take her over.

Bolik Tranquil Hill will go to New Jersey. Tina, mother of 3 children just moved on a farm, where she and her family will live with a lot of animals. Bolick shall live their as well as a familydogs, but too they want to train him as a guard dog.

the new familythey just got a calf.

Both dogs will carry on the wonderful bloodline combination of:

Anton Janin Ranc (Iro Hodkoviskej les) and

Roza z Pozdisovskej doliny (Borderlove White Power)

Our new member Christina opened a website for Slovensky Cuvac owner and lover and too for her special little female Astra.

I have written this note a longer time ago... but none visited/added a comment.

A beautiful website you can visit is from Family Hafner www.weisse-pfoten.de

Regina Mackensen, owner of a German Kennel has written a nice mail.

She asked for our USA calendar.

Must tell Regina, this calendar is sold out!

But I promised, to send the next possible edition!

Kennelmeeting of the Kennel vom Auencamp is at May 23. 2009

In Germany are ( list VDH) nearly 160 SC, but only around 50 Slovensky Cuvac as a member in the club. ( newspaper KSTA - Interview with the Vice President of the CSC e.V.)

When I remember my kennel meetings in the 80's and 90's we have had several times 30 SC and a lot of people. It was always a great fun and so I am sure, this weekend at the Kennel Von der Stockacher Halde and at the Kennel vom Auencamp will be a day of fun for all Slovensky Cuvac lover.

All people, knowing me from the past time, will understand, that I am not so keen about, publishing something about the board of the CSC e.V.,

The calendar 2009 Georg Kammerl send to me finally arrived.

Now several people will be happy to get one.

I also send one to "The White House" in Washington to "Family Barack Obama"!

Thanks Georg!

Summerdog...

Here photos of our new summerdog.

Girly has an allergy against heat. Her Doc made a biopsy, because her skin opened all around her neck. A mass for her and also for us. We clipped the neck to put on medicine and spray, what was helpful for her, but always spots came back in the long parts of furs.

So the last weekend in June I  took a sissor and cutted the long hair away. (5 hours!!)Than I took my new bought clipper and have given her the "summercut". (3 more hours!)

She is looking very strange, but she is feeling so much better.

And our "Lady Catastrophy"

this name she got at the show in Pribylina:

the judge commented her status: "no meat" ( she lost a lot of weight on the trip down to 70.4pounds) -

"no hair"she lost a lot of furs going in heat - and so on!

Living in Texas is hard for a SC and travelling in this way I think too.

1 months back in Texas she gained weight and is now 84 pound . She is in a great condition again.

Facit: staying at home is the best way instead of travelling to Europe!!!

Ulka

Lady Garbidge

our Xenia don't stop eating. Even there is always fresh food always...(I feed my dogs twice a day with a main course. Tripe, meat mixed with ready made dogfood).

But Xenia is always hungry.... she empty the garbidge ton - several times daily!!!

She is not fat but her weight is far over the standard. She is so huge!!!!

Phil and Vicky Ford have done a great job with their young male "Amar Xenina zahrada" called "Rocco"!

Friday May 12. 2009 he got a new hip.

A very complicated and expensive operation.

. Now he has to stay two 2!!! months in his crate, without walking/runing around. What a pain.

Thank you Phil, to save his live without pain!!!

Our first ever visit to one of the dog parks in Texas.

We loaded all 3 dogs and after a drive of 21 miles we arrived at "Millie Bush Bark Park". Double entry doors-totally fenced-with 3 lakes, sitting area etc. I t was very busy in the park and I had a lot of concern about my pack's behavior.

So we took the leashes off and they ran like lightening to the other dogs. Explored the area. But one whistle (Dennis is so good at whisteling), and all 3 turned around, joining us.

One after the other I through them in the water. Not easy with these heavy big dogs. But.... they enjoyed the water and stepped in a lot of times. They don't know swimming, but I think next time they will go deeper and deeper.

We can't wait to see them swimming. Wet Slovensky Cuvac smell HORRIBLE in your car !!!

Chassinta z Kmochova rodiste

Chassy got 16 years old!

The story of Chassy:

Vojteck Chudareck has given Chassy to Elisabeth Maus-Vickus Germany, when she was 3 years old.

A beautiful female with a character like a Teddy-bear.  She wanted alsways to be in the pocket of Elisabeth, as close as possible.

But.. with all her dogs, she had had to look for -  each one, at that time 18 more... (a lot of dogs, she has taken over as rescuedogs , when the border opened in Czech and Slovakia and dogs needed good new homes) and all these SC didn' t know the "Western World" with cars, trains, cities etc.

So she must socialize all.

She just found a home for "Arpad z Frystake prehrady" in Finland and she deceided, to find a good home for two other females, nearly ready to go!

So now the story of Petra is following, who has taken over Chassi, when she was 6 years old!

right site Chassy and Petra is holding her second dog, a Kuvasz male in CT/USA.

What a coincidence, to find Elisabeth in the US having a Cuvac website and promoting the SC here on this site of the Atlantic.

I first met her in Germany when she gave me Chassinta. You might know the expression of having that one dog of your life: this was she for our family!!

In 1995 my husband's company decided to move our family to the US. Even though we were excited about it Mom and the kids, two boys, 7 and 9 years oldat the time, were pretty scared. Plus I had to give up my independent bookstore.... so we kind of made my hubby agree to allow us having "our dog" to sweeten the deal. So far he always had dragged his legs concerning getting a dog but now he agreed it would help the kids who -BTW- at this time didn't speak a word English.

After visiting several pounds we heard of Elisabeth who was seeking a good home for two retired6-8 year old SCbitches. When I talked to her on the phone I told herwe would look for a adult, reliable friend for the kids, who would move with us to the US and would provide comfort and love when times might not be so easy. Elisabeth immediatly responded: Chassinta would be the right SC for you. And boy, she was right!

The first time we met her Chassy bonded with our older son right away, even jumped into his lap... jumped without lookingback into our car, peed on our door step and was ours to keep. Even though she was scared in the beginning as she came from a rural area, she adjusted to big city noise, cars and our hoome routine in a blink. Training was a breeze and she always was quick in picking up all kind of jobs.

After we moved to CT the majority of my kid's homework was insoired by Chassi; books were drawn and reports were written with her as the main subject. I think even now, 12 years later, most of my boy's teacher still remember Chassy, did she not just have to come for show and tell, but her beauty and her unbeliavable passion for our family made cquite an impression, not to mention that there was so much to learn from her.

But Chassy did not just inspirwe the kids. In learned everything about dog training from Chassy (granted I took some classes too) and became a personal obedience trainer. With quite some sucess - although, just between us: Chassy ,wasthe teacher and I was the assistant - or to say the least, we made a great team! This way many troubled dogs, almost on their way to a pound could be corrected within one to two weeks... agaibn, just between us: it often took much longer to train the owners...

When we moved to NC and Chassy was about 10 years old she slowed down considerably and she needed to be retired from her "teaching position". As there were no Cuvac in the US at that time I adopted a 6 year old male Kuvasz. Champ (yup, that was his given name!). He was a mighty nice guy, actually too nice and even sometimes goofy, so no help with obedience enterprise. He helpedto socializemany dogs but his foremost job was to take care of his best friend: Chassy! Idon't think she would have made it to her 16th year if it wasn't for him. He himself made it to 14years old and I am missing both of them every day... even though my last adopted KuvaszLilly is quite a handful and keeps me busy.

So you wonder why I recently went to google Cuvac? Somewhere in heart I knowI am up for another Cuvac. Again for an adult dog, even though my kids are out of the home - did I mention my Kuvasz Lilly is a handful?

Well, she definitly needs a smart and reliable compagnion, dominating her with brains and grace... doesn't that sound like the perfekt job description for a SC?

Let me know if you had one for me! (Oct.2008 - Petra found her male!)

submitted with kind regards Petra Fey

Aurin Pod Kocno died at Sunday June 6. 08.

Aurin, a daughter out of Cezar z Tavikovskey Farmy CZ and Fura z Lethotskej Luky CZ was Austrian Champion - BHG1 therapie - school dog; she has had 2 liutters - 9 pups.

The picture at our opening page shows Aurinin the middle, her mother Fura and Brixi pod Kocno.

Cornelia Lorenz has written:

Dear friends, Some of you know that we lost our Aurin on Sunday 6th of July 08. - nearly 13 years she was and she always will be the most important dog in my life.

She really changed my life.

Withoutn Aurin and Heidi PrinzI had never discovered the work with therapy dogs and I had never met a lot of you.

Aurin was not only important to me, but also for the many others who met her as a therapy dog, also for her friends at the meetings and also for so many pupis and teachers for whom she took away all anxious feelingsfor dogs.

Aurin always gave her love and therewith also selfconfidence to these people. She left an impressionon the people and dogs who met her.

If I have known a dominent dog than it was Aurin - in the sense of sovereignty, calmness and carisma.

Never did one of my dogs try to take Aurin's food or her laydown place.till the last day even though she was not able to defendagainstthe encroachmentof others. She never has had the need to do so, to get and to hold her rights.

Aurin was not only "my" dog she was "the" dog. Now for my other dogsit is really difficult to orientthemself. We will see how everything will develope.

Aurin left a big empty area not only for me. Sometimes I beleave life is full of lost areas that no one can fill up.

Some of Aurin's duties have been taken over by younger dogs but a dog like Aurin you only met once in your life. Only once, if you have a lot of time and, as hard as the last weeks have been especially for Aurin I wouldn't missone hour of her last hard two days.

This time was so important for her, for the people around her aqnd for all the other dogs at home.

We all have had time and the chance to say "goodbye" to let her go - even though it hurt so much.

I only have the wish that some of you can live with such a dog. It isnot possible to own such a dog, the dog owns you.

Each dog is special and a lot of dogs have accompanied me and shared life with me, but so special with this caracter are only some

Regina Mackensen has written on her website... these pictures are mine!!!

New photos from the little male you see under these photos.

Jitka is growing fast and easy to educate and live with. A wonderful dog.

Saskia informed me:

She bought this little male at the place in Netherland (dogbroker)  and told me, how happy they are with the little boy!

Here the little story: Jirka

During our walks through the forest in our beautiful neighborhood, my boyfrien Rogier and I talked about having a dog and how wonderful that wold be. Bit by bit, this plan became stronger for us, and one evening we decided to have a look on the internt what kind of breeds there are on this world and which breed suited us best.

After going through a lot of well-known breeds like German Shepard, boomer dogs, border collies etc. we suddenly found a picture of a very cute Slovensky Cuvac pup. We never heard of this breed, but we searched further and found more picturesof fully grown SC's and information on te character of this beautiful creature. We were getting more and more enthusiastic about it, talked a lot about having one of our own, and subsequently started to search breeders in the Netherlands. To our surprise, we could not find one!!

There used to be ne, but unfortunatly she stopped a while ago.

Then we found the website of Elisabeth Pisula. and we diecided to contact her. for information on breeders in our neighbourhood.

She send us through to Walter van Kerkvoorde/Belgium, who just had one female pup, but since he wanted to keep thispup himself, this was not an option.

Then, all of sudden, we found an advertisment of a SC dealer in the Netherland.

What to do?? Of course, we prefered to have a pedigree puppy, but now we were so enthusiastic on having a Slovensky Cuvac we could not wait any longer! We decided to check out this dealer and go and visit him to take a look at the puppy's. It was a drive of 2 hours, but it was worth it!!

We found out that he lives on a farm in the South-East of the
Netherlands ad that he had a nest of 4 SC puppies: 2 females and 2 males. Tghey all looked very cute and in good health. One of the pups immediatly got our attention.  He was very enthusiastic towards us, looked very healthy and happy and not stressed or depressed at all. We were, of course, warned by several peole that these puppies could be in shock because of the trip from Czech?/Slovakia? to the Netherlands.

But this did not seemto be the case at all with this cute little guy! The dealer himself seemed a good and nice (but practical) guy,  and a real doglover since he had already 4 different dogs (!!) of his own and he wanted to keep 1 female SC puppy of the nest for himself. He had a good knowledge of dogs and he provided us with good informations. This was his third nest of Slovensky Cuvac and he had always sold every puppy.

(All in the Netherlands)

After long talks together we decided to go on with the dealer and buy the puppy we liked so much. One week later we picked up the puppy and called him "Jirka", since it is an East-European breed and Jirka is a real East-European male name. I used to write with a guy called Jirka from Czech Republik when I was young.

We are 2.5 weeks later now and enjoy every single minute we have with our lovely pup. He is very cute and attracks the attention of everyone that sees him during our walks outside. He is very sweet with us and always seeks our company. He is not very open towards strangers yet, but we don't mind as long as he's good qwith us. We learned that this is also a characteristic of the breed. He learns very quickly and is very eager to learn things too.

We took him to a puppy school two times already and he likes it very much. We are very curious how he will turn out to look when he's older, for we see him change almost every day now!

I herewith include some pictures of Jirka, so that you can see forn yourself how lovely he is!

39th Memorial of Professor Anton Hruza in Pribylina, Slovakia 24May08

in Memorium Prfo A. Hruza

this festival is yearly in Slovakia! 2009 end of May in Pribylina!

The church in the center of the historical Slovak village of Pribylina with its old houses and everywhere Slovensky Cuvac!

Important for me was not only seeing the new generation of Slovensky Cuvac or studying bloodlines and pedigrees, but meeting all my old friends, a lot of whom I have known over 30 years!

Organization of the show: Jana Goliasova member of the Board Club Slovensky Cuvac and owner of the "Kennel Janin Ranc", who lives in the historic village of Pribylina.

Left side: Judge Jana Tomaskova from the Czech Republic and owner of the "Kennel Bohemia Genao"! My son is the owner  of LUKY, and 8 y/o male from Bohemia Genao.

Jana T has been ill for a long time and I was happy to  see her in a good condition!

66 Slovensky Cuvac - 3 from Belgium were listed for the show and a lot of breeders - even without dogs - showed up.

Walter van Kerkvoorde one of my special friends with "Jerry from Janin Ranc" (out of Fanfan Mustang and Xely Janin Ranc - Kennel von den Slowaken-Belgium).

He finally has had the chance to buy a grown-up female " Ema Janin Ranc", out of Borderlove White Power and Brita Malokarpatsky dvor, born March06 - x-ray 0-0. Walter was leaving with 2 dogs to Belgium.

and 2 males from Monique Steven "Kennel van't Molendorp" Belgium. ((www.slovensky-cuvac.net)

Visitors from Belgium coming with Walter:

There Beauprez owner of the Kennel van de Ijzervallei/BE (www.slovenskycuvac.be)

Here is Jan Habanik owner of the Kennel "Medzihradsky dvor" with Fiby Medzihradsky dvor born Oct07

out of Alan Janin Ranc and Tery z Cibika Nr. 36 = VN1 class:TR DORASTU

During the show I was busy with important talks at the ringside. Here Anton Cizmar, owner of "Kennel z Pozdisovskej doliny" left,

and Karel Chudarek from Frystake/CZ breeder of Slovensky Cuvac since 1968, "Kennel od Frystake" breeder of Arpad od Frystake prehrady.

His brother was Vojteck Chudarek/"Kennel z Kmochova rodiste", we lost too early.

My 30 years of friendship with these guys was worth a Slibowitz, but we also celebrated the coming 60th birthday of Karel this week.

 here some famous SC people!!

left: Anton Cizmar, ( z Pozdisovskej doliny) Stefan Pekar,( he was owner also from Harry z Krupinskej doliny), now he lives with the 13 years old son of Harry.

Karel Chudareck started 1968 in Frystake/CZ with breeding SC (od Frystake prehrady) and Prof. Dietmar Barbier he stopped breeding but is still living with his SC (formerly Barbierov dom)

The showring was busy the whole day.

Results of the show will be listed later

Meeting of SC and their owner at the side of the showring...

Second generation of the kennel "Cerny koralek", daughter of Dr. A. Valterova, my special translater. Hopefully she will come next year for a visit to Texas.

After the show we had a nice dinner together with several owners and breeders.

The next morning for the first time I met the only breeder in Russia.

After visiting Jana at her farm we went again to the historical village.

A special day there with a traditional Slovak celebration of folklore; see the picture of Dennis in front of the village girls in their Sunday dress.

The 39th Memorial was a real festival for this breed.

Next year there is a special anniversary! 40 years!!

Perhaps there will be 1-2-3??? SC from United States showing there.

On the way back to Vienna Airport Dennis and I stopped in Zlate Moravce, to meet a very good friend, Jaro Matyas -  President of the Slovakian Club, who I haven't seen in more than 10 years. Jaro Matyas. We had a great time with him!Dennis, my husband, has a lot of patience. He was drove me through the whole Slovak Republic. Here we are on our arrival in Zlate Moravce. Dennis has never had a dog, but he is fascinated about Slovensky Cuvac and he is rapidly learning a lot about the dogs and their handling.

Jaro Matyas told us, if we are coming to a dogshow in Slovakia with Slovensky Cuvac we didn' t have to pay showfees. Even not at the big International shows like Nitra Dogshow, Mai 2009 Memorial Prof Hruza or Worldchampionship in October 2009 in Bratislava.

A list of all shown dogs with results is avaible.

If you need infos/pictures about a dog, breeder, male for mating, or... let us know!

In the mid of the eighty's we started to get genealogial/table of Dingo z Polhino dvora, Grant z Kmochova rodiste etc.

And pups out of 5 litters too.  A great way to learn a lot! Also we have given the prepared furs and bones of the most important dogs out of our kennel to an institute in Switzerland. The only one on the world working in this way. take a look to www.albert-heim-stiftung.ch  At the Univerity of Giessen the preparator prepared my beloved dogs for a sienceobjekt of the future.

By Dr. H.J.Hewson-fruend BA Pedigrees -

More to it than meets the eyes

A pedigree, by definition is a genealogical table or ancestral line.

The genealogical table, or family tree, lists descendents of given parents; an ancestral line lists the ancestors of a given individual.

As a generalization, the dog world only uses the ancestral line form of pedigree.

At face value, the pedigree is little more than an organised list of names.

It will tell you which animals were imported, and which animals are related.

However, it tells you nothing about the individuals apart from their sex.

It is necessary to have a whole range of additional information about the individual dogs before a pedigree can take on much meaning.

Even then, the value of ancestral line pedigrees is over-rated. They give the false impression of heritable contribution from ancestors. Consequently, breeders assume more information from them than is valid.

The number of ancestors A 4-generation pedigree has 30 ancestors;

a 10 Generation pedigree has 2.046 ancestors;

a 20-generation pedigree has 2 billion ancestors.

If the dog has a 2 year genaration lenth, the pup with 30-generation pedigree had approximately 2 billion ancestors running around about 60 years (or more)ago. This is nonsense. It is nonsense because the structure of an ancestral  line pedigree is misleading.

A genealogical-table pedigree is much more valid. It is structured according to reality, but it can become extremly complex if all mateings and all descendents are included. Breeders indulge in in-breeding in order to increase levels of homozygosity - to increase the levels of pure breeding for given desired qualities.

So - called prepotent animals are thought to have high levels of homozygosity. Unfortunately, in-breeding leads to homozygosity for undesired qualities as well as desired qualities. It also leads to in-breeding depression.

Hence successful breeding involves a balance of selection against (and a tolerance of) problems versus relatively close in-breeding.

It is known as line-breeding. For example, cousin to cousin; nephew to aunt; and uncle to niece mateings are known as line-breeding. This means that the ancestral-line pedigree has a large number of common ancestors on it.

Hence a 30 generation ancestral-line pedigree has far fewer unique ancestors than 2 billion!!!

The Degree of inheritance from Ancestors Breeders attempt to have famous dogs appear in their pedigrees. They trust that these dogs will contribute to the quality of progeny bred in their kennels.Galton' s law of Ancestral Inheritance has helped to reinforce their trust. The law assumes that each pup gains 50% of its total inheritance from each parent and so on.

This is usually estimated in terms of percentage "blood". In reality, it is only correct for the first generation.

Beyond that, due to the way genetic material is assorted during meiosis, the law becomes increasingly inaccurate per generation (unless large populations, rather than specified dogs, are under investigation).

In interpreting a pedigree, it should be born in mind, that it is genes that are inherited, not qualities..

Consequently, two blue Australian Cattle dogs can produce red pups. Moreover, the capacity to produce chocolate pups may go unexposed for generations, or conversely, be lost.

The implication is that a particularly great dog ancestor may have passed on a given quality that is undetected for a few or several generations. Similarly, a known carrier of a given quality may have failed to pass that quality on to his descendents on the pedigree. A geneological-table pedigree, which includes all mateings and progeny, will reveal more of the genetic make up of a particular ancestor.

The probability of revealing segregation for a given quality, say red, is increased. Line-breeding is not what it appears Each unique ancestor will have a particular probability of contrbuting a particular allele.

However, the same does not hold for the ancestors of common ancestors. If the subject of our pedigree has a common gransire/dam, the proposition that the gransire/dame's parents will provide more than one contribution is invalid.

This is best understood using a genealogical-table. It means, that each individual, depending on how in-bred it is, may have very few unique ancestors in its recent ancestry.

A brother/sister mateing has 16 ancestors and a cousin/cousin mateing has 24 (assuming that they had no common ancestors). It also means that the appearance of a particular ancestor more than once on a pedigree, may lead to false expectations of itscontribution to your pup.

For example: If the common grandsire referred to above, had a famous sire, that sire would appear on both sides on the pedigree - good line breeding!! But, in reality, that great grandsire has made one genetic contribution only.

Thus, the so-called good line-breeding was on the common grandsire only. Pedigree Judging Some breed clubs are now indulging in pedigree judging at some of their specialty shows.

In effect, the best exemplars, using traditional conformation assessment based on their pedigree.

The basic for this is that "blood" is of greater importance than the animal. It is assumed that an outstanding specimen with a mediocre pedigree, may be outstanding due to chance or a favourable environment. Furthermore, since an animal can only pass on a 50% sample of its genetic information (not a specific combination), it may not be a good sire or dam.

The corollary is that an outstanding animal with excellent pedigree will be a good sire or dam (it will be more homozygous or more prepotent). At best, this is a form of praising the pprogeny tested ancestors of the subject of the pedigree.

At worst, it is full of fallacies, some of which are noted above.   In addition, the (pedigree takes no account of external factors.

To quote Willis (1976), "a poor specimen is not improved by possecion of a prestigious pedigree, though a very badly-reared animal may be genetically better than he looks".

Moreover, the runt litter-mate posses the same pedigree as the outstanding specimen, reminding us that their parents passed on vastly different combinations of genetic information. To compound this, some pedigrees are falsified and do not state who all of the ancestors really are.

Progeny Testing The determination that a particular pedigree is excellent is based on the performance of ancestors on the pedigree.

That performance is estimated from both the quality of the dog and the quality of its progeny. Progeny testing is most successfuly carried out on males, because they can sirelarge numbers of progeny, where bitches are restricted in that way.

To be done effectively, a large number of artificial factors;choice/availability of quality bitches; breeders providing optimum conditions for pups to grow in; itself, progeny testing leads to an unjustifiable bias against 50% of the genetic contribution - that of the bitch.

What performance is overlooked is the fact that if a line of prepotent males is to abe maintaned (e.g., all EE) then not only must the sire contribute E to all and every pup, but also the dam must contribute E also.

When the pedigrees of the progeny of a given sire are thus rated for pedigree judging, the inherent bias follows. Logically, the only animals on the pedigrees that will be rated as being in any way significant, are the great producing sons of sons of sons etc. i.e., the top (outer) row (line) sires, because they themselves have been progeny tested.

This bias is reinforced by kennels striving top estabablished lines of great animals from father to son to grandson etc., but as has been pointed out by Willis (1989) "this line, 9 the tall line) is no more important than any other line/s in the pedigree."

Conclusion The conclusion must be that ancestral-line pedigrees have limited value to breeders when analysing or planning breeding programs. Genealogical-table pedigrees are much more practical and reliable. Moreover, breeders must check out claims made about inheritance based on the animalsappearing on the pedigrees.

Many of the claims will prove to be biased (at best), or even  erroneous (at worst). Inbreeding for the sake of producing offspring that look like their parents  is a crime against nature

about the first big Cuvac Day in Amerika

When the history of the Slovensky Cuvac in America is written ( and someday it will), the day of June 19th 1993 is a date that will be remembered.

On that day, at Goat Hill Farm in Hardwick/Massachusetts, the home of Paul and Tracy Wilkes, more Cuvacs from more different bloodlines were assembled than at any time since the Cuvac was brought to this country some thirty years ago.

A number of events conspired to make this possible.

Betka of Goat Hill Farm (STDCOA 8901A out of Germina z Farmy Zbiroh (STDCOA..) owned by Paul and Tracy Wilkes and Grant z Kmochova rodiste FCI Interchamp + Worldchampion owned by Elisabeth Maus, Germany had given birth to a fine litter of ten puppies on April 30, 1993.

And this was the first time they were being shown to prospective buyers.

The STDCOA provided a "four generation pedigree" registration from 1982-1994;

2008 the STDCOA started to offer a "five generation pedigree".

Anyone interested in purchasing an imported SC or American breed SC, we have information about.

The next litter in USA is planned May 2009/VA. (imported female+ male from Slovakia.

STDCOA started as a member of the "American Rare Breed Association", "ARBA", who sponsors most of the rare breed dog shows.

The STDCOA is always looking for anyone, who has owned or currently owns a Slovensky Cuvac, that has not made a contact with the club.

After a successful career in sales management and office management, Ed and Nancy Smith decided to pursue what had been a hobby for them: The breeding and showing of "Slovensky Cuvac" dogs.

They purchased the " Red Dog Inn" in 1994. At that time the Red Dog Inn had been in business for 15 years as a small 20-run boarding kennel.

Their original intent was to continue breeding and showing their own dogs and use the remaining kennel space to rent out to boarding guests. That plan didn't last long as they were quickly overwhelmed with requests from boarding clients and they needed to expand the boarding capacity.

They had to stop their breeding program with their own dogs, and concentrated on their boarding facility, which required their attention 7 days a week.

Take a look at the web for "www.reddoginnandresort.com

1994 Nancy and Ed published a page about Slovensky Cuvac in "Dog World", one of the great dog magazines in USA.

Text from the Article:

"In 1982 the first Slovensky Cuvac entered the United States and the Slovensky Cuvac Dog Club of America was founded. In ten years there have been only a few dogs bred and none of these where ever been shown in the confirmation ring. This is truly a rare breed as there are approximatley 50 registered dogs in the United States today.

In 1992 we purchased a female puppy "Anuska from Goat Hill Farm" who was bred from famous Slovak bloodlines in Germany with many titles.

Just for fun we decided to show her at the American Rare Breed Association Show, which was held in Boston.MA.

Anuska

She was only 10 months old but very successful and encouraged us to continue. She is now ARBA champion and mother of a wonderful litter of 6.

The father "Pasternak vom Boehmerwald"is also a ARBA champion.

Ed Smith with Pasternak vom Boehmerwald.Pasternak vom Boehmerwald

We imported him from Germany at 16 months old, and he is also from famous parents with titles FCI Interchamp de Beautee/World champ.

Nancy with Pasternak and Vanessa vom Boehmerwald - 2008 she is now 14 years old!

This breed is courageous, extremly alert both day and night, a spirited dog of keen intelligtence. Very easy to train, sensitive to praise and blame. A devoted family dog, gentle, wonderful with his masters. Extremly strong instinct to protect children. Suspicious and very discriminating to strangers, Unsurpassed watchdog, possessing the ability to act on his own initative at the right moment without instruction. Fearless with very good scent and great resistance to all sorts of inclement weather. The Slovensky Cuvac is used in the Tatra mountains in Slovakia for defending herds and flocks as well as property.

They are fearful adversary of wolves and bears. The Cuvac's ability to adapt to different conditions, their great flexibility to accept different assignments and the ease withwhich these dogs are trained, makes it a very universal dog. Because of their unsurpassed physical beauty, gentleness, politeness and obedience they are being used in recent years as a companion dog."

1990 Finland

Riita Sisko Wirkalla

A story about "Arpad od Frystake prehrady" and his last son "RAMBO"!

Riita was active for a long time in Finland with Slovensky Cuvac, not only with the Finish Club, but also breeding and showing Slovensky Cuvac.
How Did I met her?
In the early 80's I wrote a letter to her introducing myself. Since then we have had frequent contact.
An emotionsal conection was "Arpad od Frystake prehrady", a male I loved so much. Arpad was the first Slovensky Cuvac I saw after getting my "Dingo z Polhino dvora".
At the age of 8 years, Arpad's owner in Praha wanted to get quit of him.
I asked:"Why". The owner answered:"I think you know!" The owner thought Arpad was beyond breeding age and was going to destroy him.

So I tried everything to get Arpad out of Czechoslovakia to save his live. With Riita I found a person who saw the chance to get a male to Finland. After a discussion with her husband she wanted to take this "old boy"!

Then it became important to get Arpad as soon as possible. Sigrid, a girlfriend in Germany and also an SC owner of Cucco vom Boehmerwald was easy to convince to assist. Three days after we got the message about Arpad, we drove, better flew (six hours) to Praha to rescue him.
We had a quick cup of soup and put Arpad with a muzzle into the car and drove back to Germany. It was the first time Arpad had been in a car, so we gave him a tranquillizer.
We arrived in Overath Germany the next morning at 8.340 after driving all night. First we took Arpad for a long walk, still muzzeled as he might have been dangerous. He wasn'[t in any way. We took the muzzleoffafter a few minutes because he wasd so friendly. We fed him and got back into the car, to deliver Arpad to the ferry from Travemuende, Germany to Helsinki, across the Baltic Sea.
Riita and her husband made their way from Helsinki to Travemuende to receive Arpad. But at Travemuende we couldn' t find each other. At the last minute before the ferry departed they saw us with a big white dog. After seeing Arpad and his new family off, Sigrid and I got home to Overath at Midnight. We were very tired having driven 3000km (1800miles)  in two days to save a dogs life. With the ferry to Finland, Arpad travelled 4400km ( 2400miles)
Riita visited a vet for over 6 months to take care of Arpad's ears. And Arpad lived another four happy yearsin the house ( and livingroom) of the Wirkalla's, after having lived 8 years in a backyardkennel of his original owner. What a changed life for this old Teddybear.
Each letter we received from Riita, she was proud to tell us about her wonderful old boy; The best SC ever in the world.

Duskan Cassius Arpad's son out of the first litter in Finland

She took him everywhere - without a leash - and he also socialized with all dogs around with no problems. And, he was wonderful to all kids.
One year later, when Arpad was nine, Riita started to show him. It was my dream, that Arpad would earn the Inter Champ title. In 1989 he finally got the title, thanks the engament of Riiita.
Arpad was father of many excellent puppies in Czech and Slowakia. He had wonderful white fur, best pigment and healthy hips.

Riita herself raised 2 litters out of Asta mated by Arpad.
In August 1990, Arpad was playing with his puppy, he layed down in the hallway and never awakened.

Arpad's last son called Rambo born January 7 1989 died June 18 2003 after 14.5 years.

He was living at the kennel Kalliovaaran /Raija Aarniokoivu-Finland.

He won the title " World Champion" 3 times, also 3 times European Champion and

he got Champion in 9 different counbtries.

About breeding with him we will write later!!!

photos of Rambo!!

Arpad lived twelf years. As a "retired" dog he found Heaven on Earth.

The importance of Arpad in the breed has never been honored. But it should be mentioned now. And also his Inter titles.
Arpad was a male, who gave best features to his sons and daughters.
We will talk later about Arpad' s sister Asta (cz)

The Slovensky Cuvac Origin

an old paper with some faults ?!

The breed group of the white mountain dogs derived from wolves of the Artic type, the relicts of which from pre-ice period had survived in the European mountain territories within the boundaries of icing. It meansnorthern slopes of Caucuses, Balkan, esoecially Rodop Alps and at last Pyrenees.

In this cold and wet regions we can find the mentioned type of mountain dog together with the relicts of fauna and flora, the localities of which were found by the Swedish explorer Wahlenberg also in Scandinavia.

Similar connections with the northern animals in the Tatra region and in Carpathians can be obseved in Hucul horse theclosest ancestor of which is Gudbrandstal horse. The same way the analogy of Slovak Cuvac is Pomoran Shepherd' s dog???!

Slovak sheep farming has a very old tradition. Slovac Cuvac together withmountain sheep, Huculn horse and typical inhabitantsof the mountains formed the fundamental economic preconditions for utilization of pastures by the way of breeding of cattle. The inhabitants of Slovak mountains mostly belonged to free people, refusing the orders of the Middle Age drudgery who defended frontiers and paid the duties only in sheep's cheese.

The institution of these peoplewas called: "Valassky Opasok" and its center was Kosice till abolition of drudgery. The members of the shepherd military system did their service on the mountain meadows always with their typical white dogs, the "Cuvac".

As a good offender guard and companion as well as a leader of the sheep flocks, the dog proved itself also in the watching of the cattle, turkeys and other domestic animals, ventually in watching the households.

Holiday makers, visitors of the mountains, and spa visitors found liking in the hairy puppies of Slovensky Cuvac during visits to the chalets. They used tom buy and carry this breed also to the lowlands, where for its unusal expression they have been also bred as the luxurious bred.

On the Polish side of the Tatra mountains, where similar bred-Polish Shepherd of Podhalan - the unusally strong animals are called "Liptak" - Liptov is a region in Slovakia. It clearly shows their Slovak origin. The territory of breeding of the white Slovak Cuvac is also topographically limited.

Prof. A. Hruza

We have all read the name " Prof. Antonin Hruza" several times. His name always appears together with the breed "Slovensky Cuvac". He is the "father" of the breed!

Who was Prof. Hruza?

When did he live? Where? What was his profession?

Most SC-lovers didn' t know about him.

Therefore I want to present a little bit about the founder of the breed.

Prof. MV Dr. Antonin Hruza was born on the 1st of January 1865 in Pilsen/CZ. He worked as a veterinarian and founded a breeding station for working horses.

After the First World War he went to the Veterinay medicine center in the heart of East Slovakia, to the city of Kosice. With his research he was successful in his fight against rabies.

Because of his research and a vigorous vaccination program, a substantial number of SC were saved. Breeders were given a choice: Either vaccinate their dogs or have the animal destroyed.

This seems harsh, but it was the only means to get rid the breed of rabies.

After the opening of the new Veterinarian Univerity of Brunn, Dr. Hruza was a Professor teaching Zootechnic. Later he moved to Brunn.

Several breeding stations in the region of Maehren, Czechoslovakia were founded by him. There he started the original and official kennel book for the Slovensky Cuvac breed.

His own breeding station was called Ze Zlate Studny - meaning: "Out of  the Golden Well".

The first SC-litters were registered on 04Jun, 1929. The parents of these puppies were "Jerry" (kennel book number 1), and "Kora" (kennel book number 2)

Dr. Hruza was also successful in establishing a Czechoslovakian Kynologique Organisation to join in cooperation with the international organisation F.C.I. in Bruessels, Belgium. Dr. Hruza was delighted in continuing and improving the breed. He chose three categories for SC:.

-working dogs

-breeding dogs

-Elite dogs

The first group got pedigrees with green binding, the second one with red, and the Elite dogs with blue.

The first Slovensky Cuvac meeting in Switzerland was really successful.

I got a nice essay from Caroline  Fauvre

1. Schweizer Slovenky Cuvac meeting

At my home there are living : a German Shepherd and 2 Slovensky Cuvac ladies: Bayka and Hummel von der Stockacher Halde.

At meetings with friends and their SC I heard several times, that it would be fun to organize a SC meeting in Switzerland.

That's a way, to meet more SC owner with their dogs. I loved this idea and started with organizing of such a meeting.

With several SC owner we fixed the meeting date for April 19.2009.

I rented the club house of the German Sheperd Club Solothurn.

Now the next job was, to find as many SC owner as possible. Familie Egli, breeder in Switzerland was very helpful. Also my Flyer in the bulletin of KAH was helpful.  Unbelievable, but 40 people react and they announced to come with 25 SC.

Never in my life I bought so much cheese to prepare Raclette for all guests.

At 10 in the morning the first guests with their white dogs arrived.

At 11 we started our walk together. Impressing this bunch of white dogs.

The weather was perfect and all enjoyed the time together.

Caro Fauvre organized a wonderful meeting. G. Kammerl with his 7 SC was there and more SC from Germany and Switzerland. (20). Here Caro, wearing the T-Shirt of the S.T.D.C.O.A.

Congratulation Caro. What a great happening!

Hummel von der Stockacher Halde, now 5 1/2 months old found the way to Switzerland. Congratulion Caro to your new, most beautiful female.

History of Slovensky Cuvac

In the middle of the Karpaten area, where the land has always been worked by man and dog, and to as far as "lovakian the Liptauer district"in the heart of "est-Tatra"here we will concentrate on the breeding of the white sheepdog according to the old shepherds tradition. In  the well known writing of "Erna Mohr" about the Hungarian guard dog she writes that on the Polishside of the Tatra the especially handsome white sheepdog called the  Lipptauer sheepdog can be found. "The Polish" and at the other side of Tatra "The Slovensky Cuvac". And this is where they originate. Looking down on the village area where " the sheep are strictly kept in order", the area curves down the Tatra mountain, here Prof. Antonin Hruza tried to find a typical male and female to nbe the foundation parents of the breed in the new studbook. When the correct couple had been found the Slovensky Tchouvatch was then entered in the breeding records book at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Brno in 1929. The first litter up to the conformation standards of the two foundation dogs that Prof. Hruza had bred nearly 80 years ago were first seen by the outside world at the FCI show in 1965. Dr. V. Kurz defended the standard acknowlegebly so that in the same year  at the FCI conference in Prague the "Slowakian Tchouvatch" was registered under F.C.I.-Nr. 142-CS as a world recognizable Tchechoslowakian b reed of dog. The desireable standard is thoroughly written about and biometric documentation is described in such books as: Slowakischer Cuvac - Piroda, Bratislava 1977 Specific Features of the Slovensky Tchouvatch. In ground standards we get a handsome dog with the top line of height for these being 60-70cm. Probably the most interesting feature was there sheer capability " the Cuvac replaced the shepherds". He was capable of driving the sheep herd strongly but at the same time quietly to be milked. The sheep herd must always be close at hand to the milkers, contented not pushed around. During this interval the Cuvac listens for commands from its master while at the same time sitting quietly and calmly after the pressures of rounding up the sheepherd. Another duty the Cuvac was totally capable of was  to guard the sheep day and night  and watch over the shepherds house. He was kept outside in all weathers and in the Tatra mountains down to the Beskiden there is an extreme temperature difference between day and night, so the people in this area were naturally in favor of a healthy hard dog. The weather conditions and temperature in the Tatra and the Beskiden become so extreme that is to understandable why this type of dog is needed. The opposite type to the Slovensky Cuvac would of course not manage in this climate, therefore the original mountain dog preserves the features of the type.

Typical features of the Slovakian Tchouvatch

1.Solid physically, high suitable neck, steep, strong shoulder and ankle.

2. Oval eyes with forward outlook;

3. Ears quite short-pointed ears angeled towards the mouth, ears steep and prominent.

4. When the mouth is closed the lips should be also sealed not dropping;

5. Head size in proportionto the size of the body, with a long nose. Good strong bone structure     and well musceled cheeks, the head should give the impression of strength and elegance;

6. The coat is white or off white with a high sheen, soft but at the same time thick and      dense, stronger hair on the head and usually duller,  white! with no dark markings is a       feature of the breed.

7. The tail of the dog when he is calm or at rest should point towards the ground. When he is  excited, the tail will raise up and bend over and the tip  will touch his back.

8. Some features of the coat are that on the neck there is a thick mane and the coat is long at the 1/2 ears. The hair on the back is usually wavy, the shape of the tail should resemble a  large cigar, the belly hair is of average length and when it is very long there will  be no wave on the back and a parting will be visible.

When he is casting his coat his outline will remain the same and he will still have good protections from the sun. The special quality of the coat are that when it is very warm, condensation is formed on his belly and this helps to keep him cool.

The coat is also totally waterproof and when there is rain the coat will not flatten, but stay high and dry and he willkeep warm due to a layer of air trapped at the base of the coat. The coat of the Cuvac will protect if from rain, wind, sun, and ice and due to its waterproof properties. Snow balls will not form on his belly in deep snow and when it is very stormy his coat will always remain clean.

History of STDCOA - Slovensky Tchouvatch Dog Club Of America founded in 1982

The first Slovensky Cuvac we know about in USA was brought into the United States in 1982 by Dr. Josef Schoen.

Being of Slovakian decent, he took a personal interest in importing these first dogs. He sold the dogs to people from Miami, Massachusettes etc., who took interest in breeding.

He found other people through the Slovak newspaper the "Jehodna" to purchase and promote this wonderful breed.

Josef and his wife Maja founded the "Slovak Tchouvatch Dog Club of America"  (STDCOA) in 1982 and began registering the pedigrees.

And he worked for this breed, until he sold the club in 1993 to Nancy Smith MA.   Because there is very little information avaible concerning this beautiful breed of dogs in the United States, Nancy Smith, the new owner of STDCOA and Elisabeth Maus, a wellknown breeder of Slovensky Cuvac in Europe working together to compile the history of the Slovensky Cuvac in Europe and their beginning in the United States.   A lot of people got the information about Slovensky Cuvac written some years ago with important faults.

To compound this, there were books and information written about SC also in Europe..., being cross bred with Wolf Spitz and Kuvasz or Wolfhound. This is totally wrong, even ... are suffering by impurities... exterior deficient... such as dark spots! ... only one breeder... etc. No..!!

The main leader of Slovakian studbook told about one female "Dora Zubrovske lesy", she had pups, one of them had had one black ear.

Clubactivities

very important for Slovensky Cuvac born in Europe!!! ..or born in United States! But even these SC, they didn' t have FCI-papers. If you have an imported Slovensky Cuvac from Europe (all countries) into the USA normally they have a pedigree paper from FCI Belgium. All SC-owners in the USA, that I have met don't know the rules in Europe, and the different registration documents. All puppies born in United States that do not have International registration papers are not able to visit International FCI shows in USA/Europe.! US born dogs may be shown in ARBA shows, or some other national competition, but not internationally. Now you can change this with us, if your dog has minimum 3 generation pedigrees.

The SC Club needs the original pedigree of your dog for International registration. This will allow your dog to receive official FCI registration, also for United States.   You will get your new FCI registration and your original documents back.   If you receive FCI registration and you start breeding, your puppies will also receive official pedigrees. With this registration,  you may be able to sell your puppies to European breeders.

We have to follow the rules of "Federation Cynologique International" (FCI).

At the moment Registration of all Slovensky Cuvac in United States with 3 generation pedigree and all puppies born out of registered SC. Also the dogs will be registered in the studbook of the STDCOA.   If you are interested in registering your dog through FCI, ask the Club S.T.D.C.O.A. for details.

We are planing in 2009 two trips to Europe. Showing our dogs is only possible, if your SC has F.C.I.-papers.   We will arrange a trip to Cote d'Azur, to visit San Remo, Monte Carlo and Nizza for a special event of showing our dogs.   There are 3 shows in 5 days and at each you can win titles. If your dog get CAC/CACIB/BOB in each country, you will get the title " Winner Mediteranee", You need 4 title out of 4 countries to get an International Champ. Or 3 title CAC of Italy or France or..., to get the title Champ France or Italy. (trip with dog - subsribing to the shows - leasecar - accomodation in Nizza or.. arround 1500$. ( depent on the airport you will leave and the class of accomodation.) Wonderful holidays in Europe!   The 4th show:we plan to go to Costa Rica. And last not least we will visitthe Worldchampionship in Bratislava/Slowakia. If you are interested to join us, we will organize all trips.  (all dogs showing only with FCI-papers). Flights from 500-800$ to Vienna; accomodation really not expensive, fee for showing... members of the club can see all details in our Clubmagazine "THE PAW". They started to visit shows together.

Than they started to breed Otka and she got her first litter.

Out of one of Otka's litter (with Grant z Kmochova Rodiste), the van Kerckvoorde's

Walter is shown also on the picture " Belgium + Breeder - Memorial Prof. Hruza in 1986" (Go to Album).

Sylvie Thieren has written about the way, she started to breed Slovensky Cuvac. A wonderful story, you shouldn' t miss to read!

Sylvie's mother Terese has had Slovensky Cuvac over 15 years. She loved to visit shows with her dogs.

She only has had 4 or 5 litters, and she always was contact with each puppyowner.

After being ill for 5 years she moved to a new home and started, to be helpful on shows with Walter van Kerkvoorde.

2 years ago I asked my mom, where I can by Slovensky Cuvac. Since I was 12 I grew up with these wonderful dogs and now also my husband and my kids are living for the SC.

I took contact to Germany - Kennel of Stockacher Heide. But they didn't want to sell a puppy to a family with kids.

Than we found the litter of DoriOstra hora x Irro Dlouhych drag. We boughgt "Gorki Janin ranc.

A new world opened for my mother, when we found out, that there also SC breeder in Czech Republic. We searched a new female with good pedigree for breeding and showing. So we bought "Dana z Borovyho hradku".

We tried to get a litter but it got successful after we found "Cid Bile kralovstvi". 3 puppies: Gemma, Ganna and Gundor van de Ijzervallei! Ganna we kept for ourself.

This is Gorki Janin ranc!!

We are so glad, that we entered the "world of Slovensky Cuvac"! We try to stay in contact with our Slovensky Cuvac friends and the knowledge of my Mom is so helpful.

this is Gemma van de Ijzervallei

We will try to have one very good socialized litter per year.

Now  I am proud to announce, that my Gorki Janin ranc has become father with Sissi Janin ranc 2 weeks ago.

7 puppies! And all are doing well! They are very black pigmented.

Phil and Vicky Ford - Kennel of Sandy Acres are planning their 4th litter " D" in 2009!

They got their first SCuvac "Jake" out of a litter from Paul Wilkes' Goat Hill Farm in Massachusetts.

see breeding USA-Goat Hill Farm!

Jake was unusally huge, but a teddy bear in his behavior. He was a lovable family dog.

Vicky Ford wanted a female, but Elisabeth didn' t have a puppy for her left out of the last litter. So Elisabeth looked in Slovakia. She visited an International dog show in Vienna, and met with Ingrid Mikulasova (Slovakia) and a breeder from Slovakia.

It was really hot weather. When the breeder arrived he opened the hood of his Skoda automobile, and there were five poor little SC-babies hidden in the car.

Elisabeth wanted to take all of them so they didn' t have to go back "home" this way, but she could only take one! Elisabeth have choosen "Ali Anta".

One week later Elisabeth flew to Boston to be a part of the first Slovensky Club meeting at Goat Hill Farm.

at Boston Airport Paul Wilkes picked up Elisabeth and Ali Anta - Ali' s arrival at Goat Hill Farm after 14 hours in the kennel!

Vicky Ford was there too to take her little female.

Ali had had the first SC litter at their home Chesterton.

When Ali was ten months old, Elisabeth and her daughter Isabel flew in to Washington to be helpful showing the dogs, and to show her own dogs.

With Isabel Elisabeth's little daughter they brought two Cuvac from Germany: "Mistress" and @Susan vom Boehmerwald", two young females was shown by Isabel. Phil and Vicky Ford were also showing Jack and Ali.

Ed and Nancy Smith and others were showing their Cuvac too.

Mistress and also Susan never returned home to Germany: Vicky and Phil Ford has given a home to Susan and Mistress went shortly before the flight was living home to a nice family..

The following year Vicky and the Smith's visited Elisabeth in Germany. Elisabeth accompanied the whole group to shows in Belgium and to Slovakia.

Vicky had fallen in love with a male "Lex z Kmochovr Rodiste" at Elisabeth's kennel, and took him with her to Illinois.Phil showing Lex

After all their Cuvac died they didn't found a suitable Cuvac and the Fords tried another breed "Great Pyranees". But their wish to get a Cuvac again was so great they asked Elisabeth to find a new dog.

Finally, Phil flew from Chicago to Vienna and met Elisabeth and Dennis and the three spent five wonderful days in Slovakia and located four pups destined for the USA.

Of the four pups, Phil kept one; one went to Guy Ford, Phil's brother in Colorado; the third pup went to for Russ and Debbie Hunt in North Carolina, SC-owner's for 10 years; and the fourth pup went to Phil's friend in New York State.

Some days ago I received a parcel full with documents, letters, pictures, articles from Paul Wilkes. Everything about the very active time with his Slovensky Cuvac.

Thanks so much to Paul and Tracy Wilkes.

Paul Wilkes - Elisabeth Maus with

Gemma/Germina z Farmy Zbiroh and Grant z Kmochova rodiste

Paul and Tracy Wilkes bought their first Slovensky Cuvac as a grownup female from Dr. Jozef Schoen, a Czech, living in United States.

Dr. Schorn was the founder of the first Slovensky Cuvac Dog Club of Amerika in 1982.

May 26, 1989Friday

Telegram and Gazette

Gemma in heat. Need sperm. Call immediately. That was the text of the telegram sent last week by Paul Wilkes of Hardwick to O(verath, a town near Cologne in West Germany. It set in motion a chain of events that ended with an international love affair on his front lawn.

Gemma is Wilkes dog, a Czechoslovakian breed known in the Slovakian language as a Cuvac (pronounced Choo-vach) It is related to the Hungarian Cuvac dog. The breed is extremly rare.

Wilkes is not your  usualpedigree dog person. "I'd never paid more than $ 10 for a dog in my life", he said. When his first son Noah, was born five years ago, Wilkes picked up what was mostly a labrador from the local pound. The lab didn't last long. " One day he was chasing a neighbours car, and he got splattered by a dump truck," Wilkes said.

Wilkes had been reading about the cuvac, a white-haired Slovak Sheep Dog/ "I am Slovak by heritage," Wilkes said, "and when I saw one for sale I was interested. I drove to New York to see Gemma (Germina z Farmy Zbiroh) and fell in love. Wilkes coughed up $800.

Lassie the Czech

"To me the dog is part of the ethnic heritage thing. Ir's the national dog of Czechoslovakia. They even have a television program about an old man and his Cuvac. The dog is like Lassie to them."

"It' s a great family dog," Wilkes said. "The kids can poke her in the eye, bite her, step on her, and she doesn't mind. When somebody comes to the house she gives a few barks, just to let you know she's a watchdog, but she doesn't snarl and growl."

"They were bred as sheepdogs, ," he said. "They are completely white. They look like sheep, they live like sheep, they live with sheep, they even think, they are sheep. When there are puppies they will actually nurse from a sheep. But if a predator comes along, they immidiatly become protective.

Wilkes decided to breed Gemma and in 1985 found a Cuvac from New York as a suitor. The union produced some puppies, but Wilkes wasn't impressed by the sire. " he was timid, he was overweight, an, frankly, he couldn't do it very well. He couldn't stay on top. Since then we've been on the lookout for a suitable male.

This year Wilkes was contacted by a woman who was writing a book on rare breeds. (Bonny Wilcox-Atlas of Rare Breeds).

This woman told Wilkes about ab famous West German  breeder of Cuvacs, Elisabeth Maus-Vickus. Frau Maus-Vickus has a dozen Cuvacs, a goodly number considering she reckons there to be only 1,500 in the world.

Wilkes called Elisabeth Maus-Vickus. "I told her I couldn't find a good male.," Wilkes said, " and she told me about her dog"Grant", who is a beautiful animal. She said she would get some semen frozen and sent here. We were going to artificially inseminate. That's not ideal because it doesn't always take, but we decided it was the best option.

Frozen or chilled?

"Last Wednesday, Gemma came into heat three monthsearly. I sent Elisabeththe telegram. The clerk just took it without a word. No sense of humor, some people. On Saturday Elisabeth tried to send the semen and discovered that one cannot ship liquid nitrogen on airliners. So she said she would bring semen herself. She would smuggle it, if necessary. She said she would also bring some chilled semen, which has  better iability than when you freeze it.

"well, this was getting crazier - smuggling, frozen semenchilled semen. She said, "Why don't I just come with the dog?"! I said. "You have the best male. I have the best female. This thing has got to happen. "Come!"

So Frau Maus-Vickus and Grant flew into New York. Wilkes picked them up and brought them back to his home on Goat Hill Farm on Church Street.

"The moment I saw Grant I knew he was the right one," Wilkes said. "His hair was completely white, he had a nice face, was well-proportioned, with an even disposition and lovely feet. As looking at him my heart is beating faster and faster.

"We got back here at 10 at night. We introduced the dogs and they immediately went nose to nose and started dancing around each other. But Grant had had a long flight and a car ride, and he had been tranquilized, so we decided to seperate them until the next day.

Getting situated

"Thueasday morning it turns out that she is a little taller than he is, so he can't quite, you know - " Wilkes struggeled briefly towards a euphemism and then shrugged and said to the reporter, " I'll leave you to figure out a way of saying it.

Anyway, heis trying to get herdownhill of him. I went in to get a cup of coffee, and when I came out, the buisiness was being transacted. Three hourslater they did it again."

So there is a happy ending. Jet-setting stud Grant will fly back to Western Germany while Gemma , it is hoped, will grow big with young. The bloodlines of the Old World and the New World will have been mixed, and this shaggy dog story will have a happy ending.

To ensure a healthy litter the dogs should not mate too often during the females fertile period. For this reason, Grant and Gemma are being kept seperate. Wilkes, howeve, is something of a romantic. "You've got to see them together," he said. "They really love each other." The twowhite Cuvacs were allowed onto the front lawn, scene of their moment of romance. In moments they were doing what comes naturally, and when Wilkes stopped them they raced around the back of the farmhouse, no doubt in search of privacy. Wilkes raced after them. "See what I mean?" he shouted happily, as he set off in pursuit.

Paul Wilkes with his kids and Gemma and Elisabeth with Grant z Kmochova rodiste He is sitting at her site like he did always! ... after they got happy.

A wonderful result out of both dogs job. Only one female was born in the B-litter, Gemma x Grant, called Betka! Paul Wilkes hold her for himself.

She was mated 2 years later with Cir, whom Elisabeth brought to Mass. for further breeding. She had had 13 pups! in the C-litter of Goat Hill Farm.

Take a look to Albums!

Comment from the owner of Eugene Cyril and Anya of the Goat Hill Farm

Eugene Cyril Gasparodvitch "Cyril" was named after one of the characters in a novel, that Paul Wilkes wrote, a novel that was never published. He required all the buyers from this litter to name their pups after the people in his novel and Cyril was the shortest name.

Cyril had been euthanized at 8 1/2 years due to degeneration of the spinal cord.

Anya of Goat Hill Farm on the left is daughter nnof Betkaof Goat Hill Farm. She lived until one month short of her 14th birthday and died in Seattle/Oregon, where her owner is a veterinarian. She was a very strong alpha lady. On the left Travis "Great Pyrenees, who loved her.

Our life Changing Experience

written by Nancy Smith

Ed and Nancy Smith

1993 - 2008 owner of the STDCOA

owner of www.reddoginnandresort.com

My husband and I were looking for a dog to guard our property as we just built a new home in the country and had a large yard to facilitate a large dog.

In the better of us.

We contacted Paul Wilkes MA and made a visit to "Goat Hill Farms".

When we arrived at the farm we where greeted by a large white dog barking protectively at us from the barn.

Tracy Wilkes came out of the house and told Betka ( a daughter out of Germina z Farmy Zbiroh and Grant the Kmochova rodiste) stop barking as we were friends.

Betka then understood and went back to her puppies, which were five weeks old.

After meeting Tracy and telling her our interest in purchasing a pup, she put Betka away so we could view the puppies.

Betka was very protective around her puppies as she should be.

We walked into the barn and saw a mass of white wigglyteddy bear puppies.

How should we choose?

We finally settled on a beautiful female which we named Anuska.

We signed all the paper work and went home to wait the remaining three weeks so we could take our baby home.

As Anuska grew into a beautiful, calm and well mannered dog we realized, we had a diamond in the rough.

We wanted to do agility and conformation with her, so we started training and taking her to different dog show.

Ed and Nancy with SC friens in Washington at the Cherry Bloosm Dog Show

One day we received a call from Germany. A woman who changed our lives. Elisabeth Maus ( she said pronounce like "mouse") started us on the road to success with breeding and showing these dogs in American Rare Breed Dog Club.

She came to America to visit us and with her she brought a male named "Pasternak", nearly grown up. He was quite different from our Anuska. He wasconfident in himself and wanted  to be top dog.

It took us working with him for a while before he realized, we were the top dogs and he needed to settle down.

Anuska and Pasternakhad two litters of puppies.Six in the first litter and two years later they had 10 puppies. One of these pups died at birth.

We purchased the "Slovensky Cuvac Club of America from Josef Schorn and started a new club registering Cuvac's five generations back.

Elisabeth proved to be encyclopedia of information on this breed.

We went to many shows and met Vicky and Phil Ford from Chicago area, who owned a Cuvac named Jake. (Goat Hill Farm).

They started in the breeding program and going to shows. They also purchased from Elisabeth a beautiful female, they named Ali Anta.

(Ali Elisabeth bought in Slowakia, because she never had had enough puppies out of her own kennel, but also a reason, America should get a wide range of bloodlines for breeding).

We all went on to win many first place ribbons.

Elisabeth came again to the States and brought with her three SC. We purchased a male nemed Uno vom Boehmerwald and a female named Vanessa vom Boehmerwald. The third dog was Vanessa's brother named Vitus.

Our friendspurchased this male whom they renamed Baron.

Anuska and Uno mated a year later and she produced 10 more beautiful pups.

This was Anuska's last litter as she was now 7 years old.

Elisabeth invited us all over to her home in Germany and she said: "bring the dogs".Ed and I and Pasternak and Vicky and Ali Anta flew into Frankfurt/Germany to meet Elisabeth.

We had a wonderful trip and learned a lot. We visited World Dog Show in Belgium and a Dog show in Bratislava.

So we meet world Champion dogs, ( a lot of Slovensky Cuvac), but secretly, we were thinkingour dogs were the best.

We came home to USA with a female named Izmir (nearly grown up), ( Elisabeth hold her out of litter Vita Mytska samota and Grant for breeding and Vicky took home a male named Lex z Kmochova rodiste. 5 years old)

We got buisy with our own new buisiness, a boarding and grooming kennel, and did not have timeto devote to touring around with the dogs to promote them, therefore the Slovensky Cuvac Dog Clubwas not maintained.

Elisabeth now moved to Texas and now wishes to obtain the club and start again with maintainingthe breeding program.

The first report arrived, written by the youngest Show member "R.G. Hunt, 8 years old"

the King of the Doghouse

photo Kylee Hartmann

 and his Mom "Debbie Hunt".

They have had a 2 day drive "2400 miles" from "North Carolina" to "Texas".

Alex and RG with Runa on the way to Texas

Russel and Debbie Hunt

after sitting such a long time in the car, the kids enjoyed playing..!

RG never has shown a dog. Because his "Big sister" showed Runa Janin Ranc, he has choosen Ulka for the competion "Child and Dog".

Finally RG did so good, that he was the winner in this competition.

His father, who wrote the Diplomas was proud about his son.

The dog show for us was a great learning experience. You could learn all kinds of things that you should do, when or if you are in a professional dog show. Such as how to let the judge see your dog while you are walking; how your dog should look, by body fat, and how to communicate with your dog and also how your dog listens to you while there are dog distractions all over the ring.

It also teaches you to watch the other dogs incase there was something wrong about the dog that you should learn. Then you can learn things from the dogs as well as the judge.

The judge always wants to see the dog and how the dog lookswith body composition, it's coat, the ideal proterntial of the dog. The judge takes his time with each and every dog to share everything you need to work on with your dog and how the "perfect" dog of the breed should look; from teeth, head/nose/ ear size, body composition and fur type. The knowledge of the judge should show you everything about your dog from head to paws.

This expieence has shown me, how to prepare myself and my dog for a show. It shows me, how my dog should walk/run around the ring and yet again you can still learn from  fellow contesants as well as the judge again.

Dog show visiting is fun, mostly with a "Slovensky Cuvac". And even, it is not my own dog!

I would recommend any friend to have a "Slovensky Cuvac in a dog show and in their lives.

She has had cancer!

Hopefully the other SC out of Kennel Rose don't follow her with this illnes!

March 20.2009

found Bela Bateman

Bela Bateman out of Flok Kazan Janin ranc and Asta Stastny pes; born 2002

and as a grown-up

Thanks for contacting me...I'm very impressed with the work you are doing. When we were first considering a SC, it was very difficult to find information in English. Your website is a great resource!

Bela was from Josef's first litter, born December 7, 2002. Her parents were the only two SCs that Josef had at that time (male-Flok Kazan Janin Ranc; female-Aida Stastny Pes).

We registed Bela with the CKC in 2003.

I have Bela's registration certificate, as well as those of her parents.

She was an amazing dog, so intelligent and connected with us. My husband and I believe that Bela thought we belonged to her and she was looking after us, instead of the other way around, like most dogs. We have several pictures of her; I will attach a few for you.

We were devastated when we had to put her to sleep; she was mentally alert and fine, but suffered from knee problems...we don't know if this was genetic or from slight injury during too rough play with other dogs when she was young. In Dec 2006 she had surgery to repair what was basically a torn ACL in her left back leg. Then in Dec 2007 while playing with our neighbor's dog, she tore the ACL in her right back leg. She could barely walk and after consulting with our veterinarian, we knew that she would not be able to heal from another surgery. It was one of the hardest things we've gone through. We got her a few months before we were married, so she was our baby. When she died, Bela weighed around 125 pounds and when she looked eye to eye with my husband, she was close to 6 feet tall. When she died, it took our other 2 dogs several months to get over her not being around...even our neighbors' dogs were affected. It seemed like everyone was mourning her.

I do not have much more information from Josef. He was very helpful when we purchased Bela from him, but we have not contacted him since then. While we would like to have another SC, now is just not the best time. We have a 1 year old daughter and 2 dogs (Lab & Bernese Mountain dog).

Please let me know how I should register with your site. Good luck with the upcoming event...having 15 SCs together is the USA is quite an accomplishment. Just out of curiosity, how many SCs do you know of in the US?

New in 2007:

a litter from Joel Sheriff, I still didn't know how many pups was born; imported: Polo Janin ranc, Clea spod Babej hory, Fura pod Kocno, Valika Cerny koralek, Xero Biely demon;

10% of American Slovensky Cuvac have had a fun day in Richmond, TX.

Janet and Valika Cerny koralek visited Elisabeth and Dennis and all dogs were from  the beginning as social as you could want.

Valika enjoyed runing with the pups.

In the late afternoon Janet left with 2 Slovensky Cuvac. Xaver vom Boehmerwald will live with Janet and Valika. Elisabeth is still the pre-owner of Xaver, whom she wants to show and breed if everything goes well in the future.

One "sheep"less in Richmond!

Ulka and Xaver carrying/sharing a piece of wood!

The new T-Shirts have arrived!

There are two different types:

The first is screen-printed with the Club motif and the webaddress;

At the moment only in dark blue with white printing in size S-XL.

Price: $ 19.00 plus mail (xl is $3.00 more)

The second style is embroidered.

The Club motif is in front and the web address is on the left arm.

Colors: Red, black, darkblue!

Size: s-XL

Price: $25 plus mail (XL $3 more)

We all take our dogs out and each time people are delighted to see the dogs and ask a lot of questions about the breed.

But mostly they are confused and can't pronounce the name Cuvac.

Some ask: Is this a Kuvasz? Or,  is this the Italian dog?

After fifty times answering questions, we get tired and accept other peoples' opinions.

Now after wearing the T-Shirt they can read the breed name.

And a lot have visited our website.

Breeding with SC in USA - we will follow the rules of Europe/FCI -AKC!

It is very important to prepare your SC for breeding!

X-ray: hips if possible ith the Pennhip system!

We prefer a x-ray after the Penn Hip system.

Table without anesthesia x-ray are never as accurate than a Penn Hip.

With 24 months OFA accept the pictures for offical x-ray results.

Penn Hip earlier.

The vet can take x-ray pictures of the hips and ellbow and after sending it to OFA the offical result will be done. We need always copies of all paperwork, to fill in everything into your pedigree.

If you have questions, about x-ray, DNA etc is written in the booklet published by STDCOA.

Hip Grades

The phenotypic evalution of hips done by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals falls into seven different categories. Those categories are normal (Exellent, good, fair), Borderline, and dysplastic (Mild, Moderate, Severe). Once each of the radiologists classifies the hip into one of the 7 phenotypes above, the final hip grade is decided by a consensus of the 3 independent outside evalutions.

Example would be:

1. two radiologists reported exellent, one good- the final grade would be excellent 2. One radio;ogist reported excellent, one good, one fair- the final grade would be good

3. One radiologist reported fair, two radiologists reported mild - the final grade would be mild.

The hip grades of excellent, good, fair are within normal limits and are given OFA numbers.

The information is accepted by AKC on dogs with permanent identification (tattoos, microchip) and is in the public domain.

Radiographs of borderline, mild, moderate and severely dysplastic hip grades are reviewed by the OFA radiologist and a radiographic report is generated documenting the abnormalradiographic findings.

Unless the owner has chosen, the open database, dysplastic hip grade are not in the public domain.

Also the vet has to test

- the teeth (scissor? complete?),

-5th toe,

-eyes,

we also need:

Picture of: Head with eyes, ears, lips, (pigment) body and furs, Paws - nails and bottom,  ..

the height and the weight.

A list of the heat of a female and the certificate, that a male is clean.

America is too big, so no breeding expert can take a look personal to your dog!

The Club can prepare the breeding license/best relationship between the dogs..

We will check the pedigree of male x female.

About breeding and raising puppies there is a to do list with forms in the booklet of STDCOA.

Puppies registering: a picture of each one with name; we will sent the Tatoo  or you use a Chip from your vet and pedigree.

If your dog has success at shows, even in United States or Europe, please inform me, so we can take these over into the pedigrees. ( alsways remeber at a show, ( you have to take the pedigree with you), to get a Stamp and showresult notification into your origin pedigree.

Copies of the show cards are helpful. examples of a European card!

We have prepared forms for you!

We will register each SC puppy (pedigree of the parents is required)or grown - up in the STDCOA and FCI.

Dognames/Litter: The first litter all names start with A second with B and so on following the Kennel name.

All our dogs and all our litters ,  will be registered bySTDCOA/ F.C.I.

All SC can be registered in the Club and also at FCI , if they have 3 generation pedigrees. New: please register your SC with AKC!!! The Club will be helpful to fill out the forms.

A close friend of the master, Charles, visits here from town and she is off to Budapest and environs in a few months and, no disrespect to the master, but I wish I were able to go too. Now, my elderly mate, Dubina, she has no interest in tripping to Europe. Too cold for her I think. We will see wind chills up here near zero tomorrow and I do hope I get to spend some outdoors. ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR: Kenzie White EMAIL: kenziemac11@sbcglobal.net IP: 76.242.91.3 DATE: 12/14/2008 04:14:13 PM Hello my Dear! We are happy to get contact to you! Please start to think more about breeding your Anna - Olivia! She is a wonderful sweet female with a great bloodline for USA. To have a litter is a lot of work, but more an enjoyment, than work. And a great adventure for your kid. There are several people, they started breeding in United States and each one will tell you, what to do. The Club has weekly people, they ask for a SC. To be organized in this way, it will be much more easier, to find the right families for our beloved breed. Your next step to know is: what are the hips of Anna like. A pre-x-ray with 9-12 months is helpful. In Slowakia they do the x-ray with 12 months. This is not allowed in USA. The OFA make the certification with 24 months. If you want to get contact to other breeders, let us know! Some background on me, I am an American that has lived in Slovakia for the last 5 years, and first encountered the SC a few years back. As I am a dog person, and not having one for past five years, i really missed one, so the family decided it was time to get one, and after talking to various breeders in Slovakia and doing some research, we decided on getting a SC. Pup is currently four months old and Female. (see above picture) So far, all is going ok with the pup, and we have been spending a lot of time socializing her. As my work assignment will most probably be taking me back to the States in next year or so, the SC will also be joining us back in the States. I never thought about breeding a dog before, but in the event she is able, how difficult is it to breed them? I enjoy a companion dog, but would like an honest opinion on how difficult this process is and what are the odds all the pups will find homes. I am a firm believer in no puppy mills, and getting dogs "fixed" as the world already has an abundance of unwanted dogs. One of the only reasons I would consider a litter is to support the population of SC in the USA. Lastly, i do give you alot of credit in trying to revive this "lost" breed of dog, and as long as I am living over here, if anyone would like some help on anything feel free to contact me. Thanks for reading ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR: Laura Bender EMAIL: laura_bender@hotmail.com IP: 70.20.154.47 DATE: 03/20/2008 04:44:46 PM i would love to have information on how I can have a cuvac of my own--I'm very interested--Any information would be great! was one of these special dogs. So gentle, so easy to educate, friendly to everybody. A great dog for visiting shows, always ready for a female in heat!

Lovable in each way.

We got him with 4 months, Voitek Chudareck, the breeder really has choosen the nicest dog for us. Grant died with 11 years.

He was healthy his whole life, but at 9 years his heart started to be ill. Over 2 years we have given him medicine, to take care of his heartproblem.

He was shown in Belgium, Netherland, Austria, Germany, Luxemburg, France, Italy,

Denmark, etc. Always he got his V1, always he got his CAC and/or CACIB.

He was a international Multichamp - Worldwinner.

In our Kennel vom Boehmerwald he produced the most healthiest dogs.

He was father of a litter at Paul Wilkes Kennel of the Goat Hill Farm, MASS/USA with Germina z Farmy Zbiroh.

In MASS. at a doghospital they took sperms of Grant, so we can use this again today.
